BOSNIA MONTENEGRO KOSOVO ALBANIA North MACEDONIA BULGARIA
Departure/Arrival: Ljubljana/Zagreb/Sarajevo and/or Istanbul.

CLASSIC BALKANS: Early morning departure from Ljubljana/Zagreb/Sarajevo, across central Croatia/Bosnia to Sarajevo where we spend the first night. The lakes of Montenegro appear soon after crossing the Bosnia-Montenegro border. Tara Canyon & Durmitor Plateau are stunning. Plenty of little Balkan villages on days 1, 2 & possibly 3. Plenty of good food, too.

Then it’s on to Lake Shkodra & the forgotten towns in North Albania and the drive to Theth & Kruje with its fascinating bazaar.

From Kruje through communist Tirana we sail away to Central Albania and its interesting villages and towns, incl. magical half-Turkish Gjirokastra and/or Berat.

A spectacular road will take us to Korca and on to Ohrid, North Macedonia. You’ll get a brilliant bird’s eye view of Lake Ohrid from Galičica National Park. Western Macedonia is also home to some fabulous orthodox monasteries, the Hollywood of North Macedonia is also somewhere here. North Macedonia is a half-forgotten Medieval Orthodox Paradise.

We continue to the beautiful Bulgarian Monastery of Rila; then it’s medieval Plovdiv. We finish the journey in Edirne, Turkey. Flight home from Istanbul.

Travel in both directions is possible.

Statistics: altogether 1500-2000km, some post-socialist-communist misery can be seen, many happy and sincere people will be happy to shake hands with you - Covid-19 permitting; some people, unfortunately, have been affected by the recent wars in the Balkans. Coffee is available and so is beer; Albanian cognac rules! Vegetarians will be taken care of.
